4 Signs of a Great Gynecologist

Columbus gynecologist

Knowing whether yourColumbus gynecologist is great or simply average is difficult when you have no one to compare him/her to.  So, how can you determine if you’re getting the treatment you deserve?

Here are four welcome signs:

He/She chats with you before you take your clothes off.
Taking off your clothes is like removing your armor, as it can make you feel more vulnerable. It’s really difficult to open up about something that’s worrying you when you’re sitting there in the office in a flimsy gown, so your gynecologist should check in with patients before they get undressed.

That’s not the standard procedure in many practices, where nurses have women change while they’re waiting for the doctor in an attempt to save some time. If you’re not the self-conscious type, by all means, go straight for the gown if it doesn’t bother you. Otherwise, ask if you can speak with your Columbus gynecologist before you put your feet in the stirrups.

He/She checks on your overall health, not just your period.
Your gynecologist should ask questions such as:

  1. Have there been any changes in your medical history during the past year—particularly a diagnosis of high blood pressure, migraines, or blood clots?
  2. Do you smoke, even occasionally?
  3. Are you taking anything for depression? (Some medications can destroy your libido.)

All of these factors can have an effect which method of birth control you are able to use.  But specialists sometimes get tunnel vision around their area of expertise, so if you have medical conditions that are being treated by another doctor, your Columbus gynecologist needs to know…it’s all connected!

He/She brings up topics that may be awkward to discuss.
Your gynecologist should ask if you’re having any problems with sex, such as pain or anything else you might want to discuss confidentially with him.  Starting the conversation opens the door for women who are too shy to approach such issues on their own.

He/She questions if you’re happy with your current method of birth control.
Your Columbus gynecologist should ask whether you are thinking about getting pregnant anytime soon. If the answer is no, then he needs to make sure that the method of birth control you’re currently using really works for you.

On the other hand, if you hope a baby is on the horizon for you and would like to start planning, your gynecologist can help make sure you’re healthy and prescribe prenatal vitamins before you start trying to conceive.
